Information Technology has revolutionised every aspects of Life by increasing the accessibility, speed of delivery & comforts in our day-to-day activities. Therefore, we are wired to our Computers, Laptops, Mobile Phones & related services. Unfortunately prolonged use & improper body posture results in many avoidable computer related health hazards such as :
1. Computer vision syndrome (CVS).
2. Carpal tunnel syndrome.
3. Stress injuries etc.
Computer vision syndrome (CVS) –
Continuous Usage hasn’t been proven to cause permanent eye damage, but temporary discomfort causes Eye Strain The most common Symptoms are –
- Blurred or double vision.
- Visual Fatigue
- Burning or watering eyes.
- Headaches and pain in and around eyes.
- Dry eyes.
- Inability to maintain near focus.
- Progressive refractive changes.
- Neck and shoulder discomfort.
- Change in colour perception.
Musculo Skeletal Health Issues (Carpal tunnel syndrome, Stress Injuries ..) –
The most common are :
1. Upper limb disorders such as Repetitive strain injury (RSI).
2. Tenosynovitis.
3. Carpal tunnel syndrome.
4. Back and neck pain discomfort.
5. Tension stress headaches related ailments. Increases the chances of severity of the existing ailment.
Causes –
– Maintaining an unnatural or unhealthy posture such as inadequate lower back support.
– Sitting in same position for an extended period of time.
– An ergonomically poor workstation set up.

Few Precautions to avoid Eye Strain are –
a) Blinking regularly / Exercising the eyes by periodically (20:20) focusing on objects at varying distances while working on computer continuously.
b) Keeping the air around you moist .For example using plants, open pans of water or a humidifier (spider plants resaid to be particularly good for this and removing chemical vapours from the air.)
c) Adjust the screen and document holder at the same distance from your eyes, screen height/seating so that when sitting comfortably your eyes are in line with the top of the monitor screen. Position monitors to avoid glare.(eg. Not directly in front of windows)
d) Adjust the refresh rate, brightness & contrast control of your monitor to make the characters distinct from the background for comfortable reading.
e) Servicing, repairing or replacing monitor that flicker or have inadequate clarity.
Regular Eye Testing –
Do this at least once every 2 years and more frequently especially if you are experiencing eye problems. Indicate the distance from your eyes to the monitor to your optician and talk to them regarding special lenses or the use of bifocals.
